Principal's Post
by Chris Thomas
Walk-a-thon
Thanks to all parents who played a role in the "Power Walk"
Walk-A-Thon. It was a big success. Everything was so well organized,
fun and even inspiring. By the way, the orange shirts are great!
Student Support
We are always looking for ways to provide support for students and
classrooms in need. Lately, we have started working with students who
need a little more practice in basic reading and writing skills. Our
Support Specialist (Mrs. Wing) has been working closely with small
groups of students in grades 5 and 4 before school. She, along with Ms.
Harriott, have also been working with students in the lower grade
levels. This extra support is based on careful examination of student
data as well as daily observations.
First Grade Classrooms
As many of you know, our student numbers in the 2 first grade
classrooms are rather large. While I've learned that Mrs. Warner and
Ms. Tews can handle anything that comes their way, we thought it would
be good to break students down into smaller groups during their
literacy block. Each day, Mrs. Wing uses an empty classroom to work
with about 5 students from each of these classrooms. This not only
provides students more of a 1 on 1 teacher/student ratio, it also
brings the student numbers down in the two classrooms, making
instructional experiences more powerful.
Parent Check -In
On behalf of the Bennett Staff, I want to convey how grateful we are of
our parent support. Each day, I see parents providing assistance in
classrooms, the library and even the cafeteria. You guys are great and
we couldn't offer all that we do without you. Thanks! If you are a
parent that comes to help out on a regular basis or even if you come
one day a year, please be sure to check-in at the office. This is where
you sign-in and get a "Visitor Badge." Even if you have been
helping Bennett for several years, it really helps us keep the campus
safe and secure for our kids. Thanks for your help.

From the Office
by Margie Landreth & Marilyn Champion
A friendly reminder to our Bennett families: Please help
us keep student learning from being disrupted by not making phone calls
directly into the classroom during school hours. If you need to leave a
message for your child, call the office and they will make sure the
message is relayed to your child's teacher in a timely manner. Thanks
for supporting Bennett students!
Calling occasional volunteers!! Would you like to help
with projects in the office every now and then? Put your name on our
list and we will give you a call if we need your help. THANKS!!!
Many thanks to Mary Kay Westmoreland for our yummy staff
goodies for the month of September!!
BUS NOTES: If your child will be riding the
bus to a friend's house, please be sure to write a permission note to
the office/bus driver letting us know who will be going where.
LOST AND FOUND: Cupboard has moved again. .
.it is located in the patrol closet which is in the hallway outside of
room 23. Please remember to label your child's personal belongings
(jacket, lunch box, etc) We are already starting to get quite a
collection.

Librarian's Corner
by Jean Bolivar
Book Fair: Mark your calendars for
Bennett's Book Fair. It will be held October 17-19. All proceeds
directly benefit Bennett's library. Wed Oct 17th 8am - 2 pm,
Reopen 6:30 pm to 8 pm, Thu Oct 18th 8am - 4 pm, Fri Oct 19th 8am - 4pm
The Power of the Picture Book: I recently had a 2nd grade
parent ask me when his son would start reading "real" books.
When asked to clarify what he meant, he explained that he wanted his
son to read chapter books. He didn't want to have to keep reading the
same picture books again and again. Quite often picture books offer
children richer language than early chapter books. Children can develop
fluent reading by reading a familiar text again and again. When read
with an adult, children can have meaningful conversations about the
message, the lesson, or the in-between-the-lines story. Great
literature allows you to approach topics like peer pressure, racism,
and death in a non-preachy way. Our library is loaded with picture
books that can be enjoyed by a whole family. There are books from
hysterical to meaningful. If you'd like help finding great picture books
to read with your family, come see me.
