PTSA President's Notes

by Marian McDermott & Sue Bentsen

Without a doubt we live in a climate of continual change. So much change that it could pose significant stress to children and their families were it not for the community that surrounds them. The relationships formed within the school community promote a sense of security and stability for students. When children feel safe and valued they become eager to participate and ultimately thrive on learning. We are fortunate to have caring adults - teachers, staff members and parent volunteers - who strive to create a sense of community for our children at Bennett Elementary.

In an effort to continue to strengthen our community PTSA has planned two upcoming events you won't want to miss. The first is Multicultural Potluck Night, Friday November 30th 6:30 - 8:30pm. Enjoy foods from around the world while being entertained by many Bennett students. Then save the date, Wednesday, December 5th  7:00 - 8:30pm, for Bennett's Art Night and Gallery Walk. Appropriate for all ages, the evening will include arts and crafts workshops, an instrument "petting zoo" provided by Mills Music, and viewing of Reflections entries and art projects from all grade levels.

In addition, the Staff Appreciation Committee will host a staff luncheon in December. If you haven't been involved in one of the monthly luncheons sponsored by various grade levels, consider helping in December as a way to express your gratitude to those who make a difference each day in our children's lives.

We hope you and your family are able to participate in these community programs to build valuable relationships and celebrate our children's treasured talents. Whenever you feel inspired to get involved you are welcome. Contact the committee chairs listed below to see how you can contribute to our Bennett community!

Coyote Sightings

There have been recent coyote sightings in the neighborhood of Tam O' Shanter.  As a precaution, please consider your child's route to and from school.  If your child walks to school, arrange to have him/her walk with several children and at least one adult.

Also, be sure to keep your pets on leashes and indoors at night.  If you encounter a coyote, aggressive behavior will typically scare it off.  This includes making as much noise as possible (yelling, screaming, clapping, stomping), throwing rocks and using a sticks to scare the animal off.

At school, we will continue to take precautions during recess, by not allowing students to play near the wooded or hill area (East of campus) area.

I encourage you to share this information with neighbors who are not families members of the Bennett community.

You are welcome to call me or the Department of Fish and Wildlife at 425-775-1311 if you have further questions.  Their website also has information on coyotes: http://wdfw.wa.gov/wlm/diversty/living/coyotes.htm <http://wdfw.wa.gov/wlm/diversty/living/coyotes.htm> .

Librarian's Corner

2nd graders are learning to access NetTRekker, a subscription search engine geared towards students.

1st graders will soon learn to use the library catalog to look up books.

Students in 3rd and 4th grades have been working with our dictionary resources: dictionaries, thesaurus, rhyming dictionaries.  These resources require children to apply their knowledge of alphabetical order.

The ability to use alphabetical order also helps students to access books in our library.  Point out to your child when you see items in ABC order or when you use it to organize your own files.  Have fun with ABC order with your kids.  You could put all your dinner items in ABC order.  What comes first broccoli or Brussels sprouts?

The new Skippyjon Jones books has been published!  The Secret Garden bookstore has agreed to extend a 15% discount for this book, Skippyjon Jones and the Big Bones, and the plush doll to Bennett families.  Please contact me if you would like an order form.

Happy Reading

Nurse Notes

Nurseby Nancey Goforthl, RN Bennett School Nurse

Dear Parents:

You may have heard or seen recent news coverage regarding MRSA (Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus) and may be understandably concerned about your child's health.

Health officials tell us that MRSA is essentially a staph infection that is resistant to most antibiotic.  It has been in the news lately because of a new national report about the number of cases in the United States and reports of cases of the illness at schools.

While this is a very real health concern, it is important to know that MRSA is a treatable infection, although not all antibiotics are effective against it.

I wanted to make sure that you are aware of some great resources on the state Department of Health website at www.doh.wa.gov/Topics/Antibiotics/MRSA.

At this site you'll find a Question and Answer section about MRSA in schools.  There is also some general information in English and in Spanish about what MRSA is, how it spreads, and steps that you can take to prevent MRSA infection.

Stay Healthy!

Bellevue Schools Foundation News

As the Superintendent Departs. . .

The Bellevue Schools Foundation congratulates Dr. Riley on his new opportunity working with the College Board to influence college readiness for students across the country.  BSF also thanks him for helping make the Bellevue School District one of the best in the nation, built on a foundation of high quality academics and excellent teaching that puts student learning first.

While it is always difficult to lose a great leader, you can count on BSF to continue its essential support for district-wide academic programs such as curriculum grants, math and science initiatives, and the writing program; for students who need the extra help of tutoring and mentoring; and for teachers through National Board Certification, and much more.

BSF promotes and helps fund the best possible learning opportunities for ALL our kids.

Students & Teachers to Benefit from BSF's Phonathon 2007 Success!

With heartfelt thanks to your school's volunteers, who joined with others from around the district, we were able to reach almost every family in the Bellevue School District during this year's Bellevue Schools Foundation (BSF) Phonathon.

More than 200 volunteers - parents, high school students, teachers, principals and BSF Trustees - called parents to fund initiatives ranging from curriculum improvements and student support services to teacher training and certification grants.  This amazing effort has put BSF well on the way to reaching our Phonathon fundraising goal of $250,000, approximately 15% of our annual budget of $1.6 million, which provides funding for programs benefiting all 16,500 students in the Bellevue School District .

It's never too late to donate to Bellevue Schools Foundation!  Individuals wishing to make a donation can still do so online at www.bsfdn.org/donate, or by calling BSF at 425.456.4199.

Fall Grants Announced

The Fall Curriculum Enhancement Grant (aka classroom grant) results were announced on November 7.  Over 100 different classrooms received almost $70,000 during this grant cycle.  Some of the projects funded include:

District-wide:  Important Lessons from the Chinese Cultural Revolution

Somerset Elementary School :  Young Scientists Week - Pacific Science Center "Blood & Gut" Science on Wheels program will help students explore the skeletal system, follow the path of a red blood cell through the circulatory system & learn how messages travel through the nervous system.

Interlake High:  Cancer Education for Teens by Gilda's Club Seattle - Cancer Education for Teens is an innovative program designed to educate & engage high school students in a meaningful discussion about cancer.

Don't forget!! - The Winter 2008 Curriculum Enhancement Grants deadline:  Friday, February 1, 2008.

Bellevue Schools Foundation funding provides teachers the opportunity to expand the experiences their students have in school.  For a complete listing of the fall grant awards, go to the BSF website http://www.bsfdn.org/Grants/

Want to help Schools while Shopping on amazon.com?

With the holidays approaching, here's a quick reminder to use the Bellevue Schools Foundation website link for all your Amazon.com online shopping, now and throughout the year.

Access Amazon.com through the Bellevue Schools Foundation (BSF) website and BSF receives a percentage (over 7%) of each amazon.com order. It's simple: go to the Bellevue Schools Foundation website at www.bsfdn.org and click on the amazon.com link/icon on the home page - that's all it takes!

Please note you must go through the BSF site (www.bsfdn.org) for BSF to get credit for the order.  Unfortunately, bookmarking the link or going directly to Amazon.com won't identify the purchase as a BSF order.

On behalf of the students and teachers of the Bellevue School District , thank you for your support!
