President's News
By Marian McDermott and Sue Bentsen

We invite you to attend the last PTSA General Membership Meeting on Tuesday, May 13,

at 7:00 p.m. in the library.

Next year's PTSA officers will present the proposed 2008/09 PTSA Operating Budget

to the membership for comment, changes, and approval.  The budget will include how

much money the PTSA is planning to raise next year (and how) as well as present the

planned expenses for school programs and activities (such as field trips, library books, etc.).

The budget will outline how the PTSA plans to enrich the education for students at Bennett

and enhance our community of families.  Please plan to attend to voice and vote your opinions.

If you have any questions or concerns about the Bennett PTSA and the budgeting process,

please contact us.  If you would like to know how to get involved with PTSA and the volunteer

opportunities at Bennett, we welcome you to call or e-mail us.  Our contact information is at

Art Room News!

It's feeling like a race to the finish line in the Art room these days! With only 38 days of school left until summer vacation we are finishing up our paper mache masks (4/5), and 2 weeks into clay (k/1, 2/3). Time to register for Summer Art Classes-info is on the poster by the front door of the school.

Thank you to everyone who donated cardboard supplies-the masks are looking fabulous because of your generosity!

If anyone is spring cleaning and wants to donate some more art supplies to Bennett I'd be happy to take them! My dream list would include: paints and brushes, pastels, glitter, sequins, beads, ribbon, fabric, yarn, etc.  Any crafting supplies are welcome! These will be used to embellish the masks and graduation hats.

SCHOOL  HEALTH  &  MEDICATION  FORMS

Have you tried to send medication to school for your student, only to be told that you can't do so until the authorization forms are filled out?  Do you groan every year when faced with another packet of school health forms?  If yes, take a seat in the student chair for this quick tutorial, and learn why these forms are necessary for your student's health and safety.

Authorization for Medications to be Taken at School

Form PS 403, dated 7/06

  • Washington State law and Bellevue School District policy require that this form be filled out before your student is given any medications at school.
  • In elementary school most students come to the health room when they need their medication.  Occasionally a student may want to carry their inhaler with them throughout the day.  If so, you need to specify this on the form.  Either way this Authorization form must be on file with the school nurse.
  • This form is available at the front desk and in the health room.  You can print the form from the website www.bsd405.org by going to "Quick Links" and "Health Services".
  • A health care provider's signature is required in order to take medication at school, for either prescription or over the counter medications.
  • Authorization forms are valid for one school year only, and must be renewed each year.
  •  Carefully read the 2nd page of the form to learn what medications are allowed, and to learn how the medications should be supplied or packaged.
  • If your child takes daily medication at home for a life threatening health condition, please bring in a 72 hour emergency supply.

 Confidential Emergency Health Information

Washington state law mandates that I request updated health information for your student for each school year.  If you fill out this CEHI form it provides us with necessary information about your student.  Include information you'd like us to have in order to care for your student in the event of a disaster or emergency lasting 72 hours.

Medical History and Physical Exam Report

Form PS 414, dated 1/07

·         Needs to be filled out by a health care provider

·         A completed PE report is a requirement for all incoming 6th graders and students new to the district.

Certificate of Immunization Status

  • Washington State law requires that all students have a completed CIS on file at the school.  The CIS is a Washington State Department of Health form which you can get from school or your health care provider's office.
  • Please transfer all immunization dates to this form, please do not turn in your child's immunization record from the doctor's office, unless it's already in this form.

Thanks for taking the time to attend to these required forms, and thanks for helping make Bennett a safe and healthy environment.  If you have any questions please contact me.

Principal's Post
by Chris Thomas

Once again, the annual WASL testing period went well.  As in the past, the majority of students felt confident in their responses to questions and they put forth their best effort.  Thanks teachers for helping our students meet WASL standards as well as other academic checkpoints such as district wide assessments in every major subject area and in every grade.  Also, thanks Bennett parents for sending your students to school with a positive disposition for learning.

Math Olympiads

Throughout the school year, we have had approximately 30 fourth and fifth grade students participate in our Math Olympiads program headed by Mr. Levin (Enrichment Teacher) and Steve Poteet (Parent volunteer).  Recently, we received team results scores that place our kids in the top 20% nationwide.  Great job kids!  If you or your child would like to be involved in the Math Olympiads program or the Pre-Math Olympiads program in the future, please contact Andrea Pohle (Pre-Program) or Steve Poteet.

Special Lewis and Clark program: A Dismal Camp

May 24-25, 2008
Clark's Dismal Nitch unit
Lewis and Clark National and State Historical Park
Pacific County, Wash.

Watch the adventures of Lewis and Clark come to life in A Dismal Camp, a special public program featuring historic re-enactments of the harrowing days of the Corps of Discovery at what Capt. William Clark called "that dismal nitch."

Re-enactors dressed in period clothing will bring to life one of the most challenging moments of the expedition, as the expedition members hunkered down in a camp near present-day Dismal Nitch to weather a fierce winter storm in November 1805. A small working camp will be set up, complete with animal hide shelters, equipment from the period, and a dugout canoe. Visitors are welcome to interact with the re-enactors.

A Dismal Camp is FREE and open to the public. The program is sponsored by the Washington State Historical Society, Washington State Department of Transportation, Long Beach Peninsula Visitor's Bureau, and Destination: The Pacific.

To reach the Dismal Nitch unit of the Lewis and Clark National and State Historical Park, take State Route 401. The Dismal Nitch Safety Rest Area is about a half mile east of the north end of the Astoria-Megler Bridge.

For more information about Dismal Nitch, including maps and directions, please visit the Lewis and Clark National Historical Park web site. To learn more about Lewis and Clark's experiences in Columbia River Country, visit washingtonHistoryOnline.org.

A Moving Experience

Fun Activities Can Build Foundation for Fitness
Fitness Finders believes that if kids have positive physical education and recreation experiences, they will be more likely to be active when they are older. The following exercise ideas from Ann Arbor, Mich.-based Fitness Finders (
fitnessfinders.net) can help create these positive experiences:

  • Minimizing TV viewing with exercise
  • Trading in the car for walking and cycling
  • Having an "activity day"

Read about how to plan these and other activities.

Get to Kids Early for Lifelong Benefits
Staying active each day takes work. By teaching kids healthy habits at an early age, there is a better chance their adult lifestyle will naturally include healthy living, according to Patti Howell, editor of the Health e-Tips newsletter. Howell suggests these strategies for keeping kids active at home:

  • Keep It Lean - Limit time on computers, on cell phones, and with TV programs.
  • Monkey See, Monkey Do - Parents have to be good role models. Practice what you preach.

Discover more ways to encourage your kids to get active.

PTA has partnered with the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) to produce A Parent's Guide to Video Games: Parental Controls and Online Safety, a guide full of the information that parents need to know about video games. Copies of the English- and Spanish-language versions of the guide can be downloaded from pta.org/mediasafety.

Managing Your Child's Video Game Usage

Download Parent's Guide for Video Games, Online Safety
Video games can be a great source of entertainment and learning for the whole family, but it's important for parents to fully appreciate what the experience of playing games today encompasses. Many include features that go beyond the game play itself, and include social and interactive elements like online chat with other players. As parents, it is up to us to be informed and to make smart choices when it comes to the games we allow our children to play.

Find out what you can do to promote responsible video game usage.

Volunteers Needed:

If you are interested in volunteering for this event, both adult & high school students are needed for the week of June 2 - 6, 2008.  For further information, please contact Christena Coutsoubos in the BSF office christena@bsfdn.org, 425.456.4199.  Thank you!
