Principal's Post

Dear Parents,

I hope everyone had a wonderful break-dare I say that it was too long?  Anyway, I have enjoyed my conversations with students this week.  Lot's of stories about the Winter break and lot's of excitement about being back to school.  It's clear that we're on our way to a great 2009!

Makeup days

To make up the five school days, the District and Bellevue Education Association have agreed to add five school days to the end of the school year.  The last day of school will be Thursday, June 25th.  If you are interested, revised school calendars will be available at the front office.

Kindergarten Information Night

If you have a child entering Kindergarten this fall, please join us Thursday, January 29 (6:30-7:30 pm) for our annual Kindergarten Information Night.  The Information Night is intended to help parents further prepare their child for the rigors of Kindergarten in the Bellevue School District .  In order to enroll your child in Kindergarten, they must be five years old by August 31, 2009.  The Kindergarten Information Night will be held in the library at Bennett.

Grade Reports

In early December, you should have received a Progress Report that indicates how well your child has done meeting the learning expectations for the First Trimester of the school year.  The Progress Report uses a scale of 1- 4 to show you your child's performance. A 1 means that your child is significantly below grade-level expectations for this time of year; a 2 means your child is working toward meeting the grade-level expectations; a 3 means your child has met the grade-level expectations for the fall; and a 4 means your child exceeds the grade-level expectations at this time in the school year.

If you would like to see a blank copy of the Bellevue School District Progress Report so that you are clear about what it will contain, you can retrieve a blank copy from the Curriculum Web at
http://curriculum/C11/C5/Elementary%20Report%20Card/default.aspx <http://curriculum/C11/C5/Elementary%20Report%20Card/default.aspx> .  From there, click on the grade level you desire.

ReUse a Shoe Project

The Bennett Eco-Kids are starting a tennis shoe drive for the Nike ReUse
a Shoe Project and it will run from January 12 - January 30.  Our school
goal is to collect 100 pair of shoes, which will be used to create sport
and playground surfaces such as tracks, indoor and outdoor basketball
courts, tennis courts, and synthetic turf.  This is one the Nike's
longest-running environmental programs and to date, more than 21 million
pairs of shoes have been collected.  Any brand of athletic shoes may be
donated but they must be dry, free of mud, and cannot contain metal.  If
you have shoes to donate, please send them to school and place them
inside the collection box located by the Bennett office.  Thank you!

Focus Day 2009

Focus Day 2009 will happen on Thursday, February 26th. Bellevue PTSA has organized a bus, and we'd like to have as many Bennett parents on the bus as possible!

A no-hassle way to show the legislature that PTA is involved - no driving or parking, and PTA leaders provide educational information on the trip. Bring a friend!

For more information, please check out this website: http://www.wastatepta.org/leg/session_09.htm

If you're interested in participating, or have questions, please send an email to bethantuttle@hotmail.com.

Art for Kids

Art for Kids School will again be offering art classes, for the Winter/ Spring semester.  These are ongoing classes and projects are not  repeated (new and returning students are welcome).  The program is  process oriented and designed to enhance your child's enjoyment of art  and creative expression.  The emphasis in the program is to acquaint  children with various materials to enhance their self-esteem in  regards to their creativity and to develop skills (in a sequential- learning program, similar to piano lessons).  Children have an  opportunity to explore their creativity through a variety of materials  including pen and ink, watercolors, acrylics, pastels, clay, and  plaster.  Drawing techniques are incorporated in these classes as well  as painting and sculpting techniques. All supplies are furnished. The  instructor is a professional, degreed artist.

To learn more, and to register your child, please visit our website at www.artforkidsschool.com.

If you do not have Internet access, or if you have additional  questions, please call the Assistant Director, Keyan Meymand at (206)  774-9970. Classes are small and prompt registration is essential to  reserve a space!

YOUR DONATION MAKING AN IMPACT ACROSS THE DISTRICT -
Whether your child is in elementary, middle or high school, your generosity is impacting all students throughout the district.

Here's an example of how your gift is making a difference in both mathematics and science this year...

Math Expressions:  Every K-5 student is benefiting from the new Math Expressions curriculum that emphasizes math concepts, computational fluency and problem solving skills.  Every student will be challenged to achieve in math with supplementary leveled instruction to support the spectrum of learners from ESL students to gifted young mathematicians.

Thanks to your support, BSF is providing $170,000 towards Math Expressions this year.

Today's Science:  All middle and high school students are benefiting from an improved science curriculum, based upon the latest scientific and learning research, and professional development for teachers.  Curriculum improvements to the science courses, including Physics in 8th Grade, Biology in 9th Grade and Chemistry in 10th Grade, will prepare every student to complete a college preparatory physics/biology/chemistry sequence by Grade 10 and be ready for Advanced Placement (AP) or college-level science courses by Grade 11.
With your help, BSF is providing $150,000 towards the science curriculum advancements this year.
