Principal's post
Welcome Back to School Bennett Families!
I hope everyone has had a safe and enjoyable
summer. I am looking forward to the first day of school and to
getting to know each of your children this year!
The staff and I kick off our work next week while attending the
Elementary Summer Institute, where we will work on refining best
practices, updating ourselves on the latest research in education and
coming together to build the vision and mission for each and every
student's academic success.
As August 31st nears, it would be helpful if you can
support our efforts with the logistics of starting school. Below is a
list for you to be mindful of while supporting your child(ren) in
having a successful first month of school:
The office
will open on August 19th and will remain open M-F from 9:00-3:00pm.
Should you know someone who has not registered their child, please
encourage them to do so as our school's total enrollment is what
drives staffing allocations. Should you have any questions, please
feel free to call 425-456-4800.
Your child's
placement card will go out in the mail on August 26th. Once you've
received your card, please feel welcome to stop by school and help
your child find their outside classroom door, where they will line up
on the first day of school.
The week before school starts is a great time to help
your child get back in the "school routine" with going to
bed earlier and waking up earlier. Please support them in getting
prepared to be the best they can be as they return from summer
vacation!
While we typically have nice weather the first few
weeks of school, it's tempting to wear flip flops or loose shoes to
school. However, we strongly recommend all shoes have a close-toe and
are secured with straps. This allows for each child to run freely and
safely at recess as well as during their physical education class.
Thank you for your support ahead of time with matter!
Looking forward to meeting you all on August 31st! All
are welcome to attend the PTSA "Welcome Tea", near the gym,
on the first day of school. The Welcome Tea will begin, following the
second bell at 9:00am! See you soon!

Bennett Playground
Kindergarten Meet & Greet
August 18, 2008 at 2:00 PM and August
29, 2008 at 10:00 AM. This is a great way to meet other
families beginning at Bennett.
Bennett Walkathon is
September 18
The Walkathon is a PTSA-sponsored family event, and
will be our biggest fundraiser of the year. The money raised
goes to the PTSA general fund, which provides money for technology
equipment, field trips, assemblies, the math olympiad, teacher's
aides in the classrooms, the science fair and many other activities
that benefit our children. Our goal for this year is to have each
student raise $250.00 through donations and pledges.
This is a day of fun for the entire family! Please save the
date. Many volunteers are needed for the event. Look for a
volunteer sign up board outside the school office.
Please look for your bright lime green PTSA
Membership form in the packets that are being mailed home. Fill out
your forms and bring them along with your payment to school or send
them with your child to class. The membership money goes to support
your children at Bennett and does not obligate you to volunteer ...
although volunteers are always welcome!

Community News
YMCA
Adventure Guides - Friends Forever
The Y-Guides program, formerly known as Indian Guides,
is a parent-child program designed to help foster a lifetime of
understanding and companionship between a parent and child.
Activities support one-on-one interactions between a parent and a
child. Parent-child pairs participate in these activities with
other pairs in a "circle." Each circle enjoys monthly
activities together. In addition, the YMCA hosts
events throughout the year for Y-Guides such as campouts, the
Pinewood Derby Races, and more! Y-Guides can be boys or girls
from Kindergarten through 3rd grade. We also have a Tykes
program for 3-5 year olds and a Westerners program for 4th - 8th
graders.
For more information please contact Dave Mayer at
the Lake Heights Family/Coal Creek Family YMCA at dmayer@seattleymca.org
or 425-644-8417.
