Bennett Elementary PTSA

Dear Parents,

Bennett is forming a 4th & 5th grade team to participate in the Math Olympiads. During this school year, your child will be participating in the Mathematical Olympiads for Elementary and Middle Schools (MOEMS). A nonprofit public foundation, MOEMS provides wonderful opportunities for your child to solve challenging math problems in a team environment and enter into contests demonstrating his/her skills. These activities will develop students’ ability to reason, to be resourceful, and to creatively solve challenging math problems.

The first meeting will be held Thursday, October 6, 2011. The team will meet on Thursdays after school from 3:30 to 4:30 PM in Room #4. There will be 5 contests throughout the school year. The contests are scheduled approximately once a month on Thursdays (beginning Nov. 17 with the last one on March 6). Our students will participate during Math Olympiads club time. Each contest will consist of 5 math problems and all contests will be held at Bennett (there is no travel required). Please see http://www.moems.org for more information on Math Olympiads, including dates of all the contests and sample problems. Please note that this requires a commitment by the students to attend most of the practice sessions and all of the contests. Students are expected to practice normal classroom standards for behavior during all practice sessions and contests. There is a $50 registration fee. Please make the check out to “Bennett PTSA”. Please register by September 30, 2011.

Because this is an after school activity, your child will need to be picked up at 4:30p.m. at the outside door to Room 4, as the front doors to the school are closed at that time. Please return the bottom portion of this letter permitting your child to participate in this club and also agreeing to pick your child up promptly by 4:30p.m.
