PTSA Legislative Conference was October 2-3, 2009, in SeaTac

The results from the legislative priority survey sent out last week show the priorities for Bennett elementary school parents.

The top five priorities for Bennett parents are, in order,

1.       strengthening math and science

2.       basic education funding

3.       Washington state assessment system improvements

4.       Support rational approaches to teacher compensation

5.       School emergency preparedness

In the following chart, the shortest columns reflect the highest priority.

This year, all proposals maintain their current position, and new proposals fall in line underneath based on voting Friday night at the Assembly. There were four new proposals, and two were voted down:

1.       Amendment to “Rational Approach to Teacher compensation” – passed and is in 13th place

2.       Fund Education First  - voted down, not on the agenda for 2009/2010

3.       Music and Arts Education – passed, and is in 14th place.

4.       Weighted GPA – voted down, not on the agenda for 2009/2010

Another issue that very much affects Bennett Elementary is Initiative 1033. The Washington State PTA board has endorsed a “No” vote on I-1033.

Here is a short list of resources to help each parent make up their own mind:
